Yoga has been practised for thousands of years. Today, millions of people still practice dozens of styles, new and old. In the United States, from 2012 to 2016, the number of people practicing yoga grew more than 50%.  There isn't one single reason that is driving people to this millenia-old practice, although yoga experts suspect it has something to with the combination of physical and mental health benefits associated with the practice. Sally Sherwin is certified by Yoga Alliance, the world's largest nonprofit yoga association that certifies teachers and schools.  “The health benefits of yoga are different for different people”, says Edward Laskowski, MD, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist and the co-director of Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.  There are about 20 major different types of yoga, and certain types can appeal to certain people, Laskowski says. A few examples are: Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga Yoga is a physically demanding type of yoga that moves quickly from pose to pose. Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini Yoga combines posture, breathing, breathing, meditation, and the chanting of mantras.  Yin Yoga: Yin Yoga is a style in which there is no flowing from pose to pose. You stay mostly seated on the ground or lying down on your back or belly.  Yoga Props can be an equalizer to help make poses more accessible to people of all body types, says Krucoff, an instructor certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists and Yoga Alliance. Some people have shorter arms or a longer torso and using a block or a yoga strap can help people get into a pose safely, she says.
